Background
Spectra Watermakers Inc. was formed in 1997 as a division of Edinger
Marine Service, Inc. (EMS) founded in 1976 by Bill Edinger. EMS served
Northern California as a, well-respected marine equipment distributor
and systems engineering firm. Edinger Marine marketed, installed and
maintained a variety of marine based products, including watermakers.
Upon discovering the need for a new low energy technology for the watermaking
sector of the marine market, EMS developed the basic product, which
is currently manufactured by Spectra Watermakers Inc. Since its inception,
The Spectra Division has designed, manufactured and sold advanced technology
in reverse osmosis (RO) desalinization systems. Throughout the years,
The Company has refined and implemented a number of improvements that
continues to make Spectra the system of choice in its market segment.
Currently The Company's products are distributed globally, with agents
located in the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, Australia, New
Zealand, South and Central America, Caribbean, Persian Gulf, The Far
East and Pacific Rim. The Company has added new distributors and dealers
increasing the reach of the product line to every corner of the globe.
Management and Engineering Team
Spectra’s management team is comprised of individuals whose backgrounds
depict dedication to the marine industry along with noted experience
in engineering, operations and marine applications. The Company's President
plus most of the original management and advisory staff have countless
years of business building and management expertise. The core management
team that brought Spectra to its current position in the pleasure marine
market place still focuses daily on engineering, new product development
and constantly changing market conditions.
Current Product
The Spectra Watermachine is the result of a remarkable technology known
as the "Clark" High Pressure Pump. While reverse osmosis watermakers
have been used aboard ships and yachts for many years, not until the
inception of the Spectra system was it possible to make water in an
energy efficient, quiet and ultra-reliable manner. To provide perspective,
a conventional AC watermaker requires 150-watt hours per gallon, and
the most energy efficient low voltage 12-volt or 24-volt machines require
36-watt hours per gallon. The Spectra watermaker requires only 13 watt-hours
per gallon, just 33% of the energy required by the best competitive
technology. As a result of this one design feature, Spectra brand recognition
was built quickly with our first modular products targeted to the cruising
sailor who values low DC power consumption, quiet operation, reliability,
ease of operation and maintenance, and quality global field service
and support.
Reverse osmosis technology has been in use for years to desalinate water
in marine and land based applications. It is the dominant technology
for desalinization. Existing technologies use conventional high-pressure
pumps, which require large amounts of energy as well as intensive maintenance.
Spectra's Clark pump is a hydraulic design Spectra has been using for
more than 10 years to make water efficiently and reliably. The "Clark"
High Pressure Pump's unique characteristic is what differentiates Spectra
Watermakers from all others. Because of this highly energy-efficient
and scalable hydraulic technology, Spectra systems are unique in their
ability to operate on low voltage direct current, making them ideal
for many solar or wind-driven applications. A critical point to understand
is that the "Clark" High Pressure Pump is versatile enough
to be used in systems ranging from 150 gallons per day (GPD,) up to
1000 GPD. Another unique feature of the Spectra system is that the product
water output volume does not vary with water temperature changes.
The Company has been selected as the product of choice for high profile
events and races. The high performance record-breaking catamaran 'Playstation'
has, from the onset of early March 1999, two Spectra watermakers that
rode in two world record trade route events. The next record breaking
cross-ocean event was Orange II shattering all previous records using
two Spectra systems. The previous Volvo Cup World Race, which covers
over 24,000 miles, included 7 out of 8 boats which had Spectra water
makers on board. This year 7 of 7 boats had Spectra units on board.
The record-breaking mono-hull "Ocean Planet" is equipped with
a Spectra water making system. This vessel has now, under the command
of Bruce Schwab, completed a record breaking solo circumnavigation.
Customer Service
Spectra's team is committed to exceed our customer's expectations in
service and support. Founded with its primary focus in servicing its
customers, The Company understands the need in providing extraordinary
service to the customer base. Exceptional after market service validates
the customer's product choice and insures that the "word of mouth"
reputation is positive. This is imperative in the world of offshore
sailing. Spectra Watermakers Inc. makes every effort to ensure that
their distributors and representatives have the best and most qualified
service support available. The Company has 65 factory trained, servicing
distributors located throughout the globe that can assist customers
with service or parts. As the market grows, Spectra will continue to
invest in a comprehensive distributor training program to further build
and improve the distribution network.
